Electricity Transportation: SONATREL Unveils Ambitious Projects

The Director General of the electricity transportation company announced some ongoing and future projects while commissioning newly promoted staff of the enterprise on February 25 in Yaounde.

T he national electricity transportation corporation better known by its French acronym as SONATREL has several projects in the pipeline to enhance the electricity transportation network of the country. The Director General of the Stateowned corporation created in 2015 by a presidential decree, while commissioning recently appointed senior staff of the outfit on February 25 in Yaounde, stated that the government and its partners notably the World Bank have put in place a programme (2016-2021) to improve and modernise electricity transportation network in the country. Victor Mbemi Nyaknga said some 460km new electricity transportation network lines will be constructed and several new power stations to be constructed and old ones rehabilitated. SONATREL effectively took over the management of electricity transportation network in January 2019 and effective transported 100 per cent of the energy produced. Amongst other projects, the SONATREL boss mentioned the construction of a 400KW new power stations in Nyom II to store hydro-electronic energy that will be generated from the Nachtigal dam presently being constructed, others in Oyomabang, Ngousso, Nkolbisson all in Yaounde and Garoua, Maroua, Deido in Douala amongst others. Mr Nyaknga also announced that some six power transformers have been ordered by SONATREL. Three of the transformers are due to arrive the country by midMarch and will be installed in Kondengui, Ahala and Limbe power stations to boost the supply of electric energy during the upcoming African Football Championship (CHAN 2020) while the rest are due to arrive in June ahead of 2021 AFCON...
