Cassava Products Triggers Cultivation

Exportation of garri, bobolo and miondo have increased with time while the demand for other cassava products like starch, water-fufu and flour is on the rise.

Cassava is one of the most cultivated tubers in the Littoral Region in particular and the entire nation in general. Statistics from the Regional Delegation of Agriculture and Rural Development in Littoral indicates that cassava is one of the main agricultural products cultivated in all four Divisions of the region. According to Ndangmo Josée Cécile Epse Feudjia in the Service of Agricultural Statistics and Findings at the Regional Delegation of Agriculture, there is high demand for cassava in the region. She also disclosed that cassava is the first agricultural product cultivated in the Wouri Division while it is the second main cultivation in the Moungo and the Sanaga-Maritime Divisions and then third in the Nkam Division. For some years now, it was cultivated solely for family consumption, but today, many associations and cooperatives have taken up production while the processing of cassava has also got many involved. Though “bobolo”, “miondo”, garri and water-fufu are some of the most sought-after by products, other products like starch, cassava flour, and cassava puff ball are increasingly visible on the market. Most farmers now cultivate cassava especially the white type for processing while the red type, which according to farmers is more delicious, is good to be eaten in its boiled form with vegetable soups.
