Maize, one of the country’s staple foodstuff has seen a rise in prices within the last two weeks as observed by vendors across markets in the nation’s capital. A five litre bucket-full of maize which until recently cost about FCFA 750 be it the red or white maize now costs about FCFA 1000 in local markets. Maize retailers explained that out of the fact that they buy a 50 kg of this commodity at FCFA 29.000 against FCFA17,500 a few weeks back, according to them several factors are responsible for the disturbing situation. At the Etoudi market, a 1.5 litre of maize costs FCFA 250 while a 10 litre bucket sells at FCFA 2000, a quantity which to many retailers is preferably bought by customers.
