The Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development and the Director General of the Export-Finance-Deutsche Bank signed a loan agreement in Yaounde on September 21, 2021.
The localities of Buea, Tiko and Mutengene in the South West Region are now hopeful that their potable water nightmares will soon be a thing of the past. With dilapidated water scheme and increase in the population of these localities, access to water is presently as difficult as a Carmel passing through the hole of a needle. The acute water scarcity in these towns of Fako Division will soon be history as feasibility studies for the construction, rehabilitation and extension of the water project will soon start. To this effect, the government of Cameroon through the Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey and the Director General of the Export Finance-Deutsche Bank, Humaya Harati, Tuesday September 21, signed a loan agreement amounting to USD 5 million (about FCFA 3 billion) to finance the feasibility studies of the project which constitute the first phase.
According to Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey, the entire project that is from studies to realisation is expected to cost FCFA 54 billion (USD 110 million). The studies whose contract was already awarded to two American enterprises; Environmental Chemical Corporation West Africa (ECC) and General Electric (GE) by Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (CAMWATER) in 2014 are expected to last for six months while the execution phase will take 24 months. Upon completion, MINEPAT boss revealed, potable water production capacity will increase to 30,000 cubic metres per day with a storage capacity of 16,000 cubic metres and distribution and transportation network of about 287km.
