Accord Attention To The Emerging Sector

The beauty, wellness and skin care sector is more and more breaking new grounds as many people wants to look good every day. With the present dispensation of social media networks, the demand for beauticians’ services and products is fast increasing. Unfortunately, the majority of the service providers in this emerging sector are still in the informal sector. Even the training is still being done more in the neighbourhoods with transfer of skills through apprenticeship. The sector which is in a near state of abandonment by the powers that be, deserves to be accorded particular attention. The attention is not only to impose taxes on the small businesses in the sector which actors say is already discouraging the growth of the industry but also to provide accompanying measures in order to support entrepreneurs in the industry. The various government structures notably the Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Arts and Culture should put in place institutional support to galvanise the sector to higher heights. Over 90 per cent of the materials used in the sector are imported with less than 3 per cent produced locally. This should be an eye opener to the State authorities to promote Made-in Cameroon in the sector especially at a time the government is singing its import-substitution song.
