World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings: Cameroon Renews Commitment To Respect Project Deadlines

The Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey took part in the virtual conferences of the 2021 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings that has just ended in Washington DC.

Cameroon’s Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey who also doubles as World Bank Governor in Cameroon has assured officials of the Bretton Woods institutions that Cameroon is resolutely committed to respect deadlines of projects destined for the country under the funding of the World Bank group. Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey was reacting to the opening remarks by the World Bank Vice President for West and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana who chided Cameroon for late signing of credits meant for projects. Mr Diagana who was speaking while chairing a virtual bilateral meeting between the Bretton Woods Institution and Cameroon, stated that late signing of credit accords already impacts negatively the execution of the projects. He cited the Cameroon-Chad interconnection project whose credit is yet to be signed as well as the new project to acquire Covid-19 vaccine which he said should not be delayed because it concerns human lives. The World Bank Vice President stated the bilateral meeting was a follow up to his recent visit to Cameroon which plays a crucial role in the Central Africa as well as its efforts to enhance infrastructural development and boost sustainable growth. He expressed concerns over some pertinent issues such as covid-19 vaccine hesitance, impact of climate change as well as security challenges.

On his part, the Minister of the Economy, elucidated on the topics raised by the World Bank Vice President. On Covid-19 preventive vaccine which is less than 5 per cent administered in Cameroon and Africa in general, Alamine Ousmane Mey reassured that government is opting for strategies that gives better prospective for a rebound of activities. To attain the 40 per cent vaccination objective in Cameroon, the government, he stated is maximizing communication and sensibilization of the population in view of attaining a large population in order to guarantee collective immunity against the virus. The USD 30 million (about FCFA 17 billion) World Bank resources to acquire the vaccine are yet to be signed. Minister Alamine Mey said as a new policy to acquire the vaccine in partnership with the World Bank and African Union will be reviewed “as resources put in place must be used rapidly because it is a crisis situation.”
