The annual conference of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development took place on Tuesday February 22.
Increasing food production and ensuring the recovery of some important crops as well as accelerating the putting in place of processing units within the framework of government’s import-substitution policy are some of the priorities of the Ministry of Agriculture in 2022. The objectives were defined in Yaounde Tuesday February 22, as central and devolved services of the Ministry as well as projects, programmes and corporations under its tutelage converged to chart the roadmap for 2022.
The annual conference chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe was also an opportunity for stakeholders of the sector to evaluate the performance of 2021 which the head of the ministerial department described as challenging. 2022, Minister Mbairobe reminded his collaborators, would be more daunting given enormous challenges some of which is to launch the recovery plan of some major crops like coffee whose production have been dwindling and the agricultural sector as a whole impacted by the effects of COVID-19. For the cocoa, efforts are afoot to boost production in all the eight production basins. Minister Mbairobe revealed that some 8 million cocoa plants will soon be received and distributed during the first cocoa season of 2022. As far as coffee is concerned, the recovery plan is being finalized though the Minister expressed worries on the needed means to produce planting materials and reboot.
