Hike In Building Materials: Gov’t In Permanent Concertation

The Minister of Trade has been holding several meetings with economic operators in a bid to contain the rising prices.

T he impact of the global coronavirus pandemic is still glaring on prices of commodities long after many countries have relaxed barrier measures and opened up their borders for international trade. The prices of most imported commodities like building material have remained high in the international market thus impacting the prices of such products in Cameroon. Amidst rising prices of basic commodities including building materials like cement, iron rods and roofing sheets, the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana has been holding permanent concertation with economic operators in a bid to bring the situation to under control. He has maintained that Cameroon has been resilient in the face of the global health crisis with its inflation rate contained around 2 per cent, less than the 3 per cent rate in the sub-region. This, he attributes to efforts made by the government to attenuate the effects of the rising prices in the international market on Cameroonian economic operators. Minister Mbarga Atangana has maintained the public-private dialogue policy with constant discussions with concerned economic operators of different sectors. In one of the meetings, he reiterated government’s efforts such as exoneration of certain taxes for importers and the 80 per cent rebate on transport duties sea freight recently authorized by the Ministry of Finance.
