The maiden working session of the Association of the Regional Councils/ Assemblies presidents ends this Wednesday March 2, in Yaounde.
T he maxim ‘divided we fall and united we stand’ is being taken seriously by the eight Regional Councils and two Regional Assemblies (Special status for South West and North West), as the Regional chief executives have opted to synergize actions via an association. The Association of Regional Councils Presidents, created to serve as a common platform for dialogue and sharing of ideas to better confront development challenges, held its first ever ordinary session on Tuesday March 1, with the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam as guest of honour. Addressing the Regional Council Presidents, Minister Elanga Obam said the association should be a lobby group that advocates on strategic problems to seek common solutions for specific issues. While assuring the regional authorities of government’s listening ears, the Minister exhorted them to federate actions and work in collaboration in order to better tackle local development challenges. He advised the Regional Councils Chief Executives to be prudent and exercise patience in budgetary previsions as the government sticks to the strict respect of budgetary chain from planning, programming, budgeting, follow up and evaluation. On this score, the Decentralization and Local Development boss urged Regional authorities to be methodical and involve all stakeholders especially citizens in the drawing up of their respective Regional Development Plan, which is a blueprint for local development.
