Create A National Structure To Manage Sporting Edifices

It is no longer news that Cameroon successfully hosted the 2021 African Nations Cup (AFCON) competition in glamourous style. The event was one of the best the continent has ever organized thanks partly to the modern sporting infrastructure dotted in various towns and also because of the organizational prowess of the country. Yes, the 33rd edition of the AFCON Total Energies has come and gone but the infrastructure the hosted the 52 matches are as well as the several training venues are standing tall testifying the colossal sums of money invested to erect them. The Olembe sports complex is even still under completion with facilities like hotel, shopping mall, gymnasium amongst others expected. But will these facilities in the various stadia serve after the tournament? This is a million dollar question given that government has invested no less than FCFA 425 billion within the last decade within its policy of modernizing its sporting infrastructure. These investments, mostly carried out with borrowed funds, needs to be well managed for sustainability. For now, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education is in charge but with no visible business plan to exploit the facilities for income generation. Knowing fully well as government ministries function in Cameroon with a lackluster governance system void of innovative ideas, these infrastructure which we see today as jewels may just be left to depreciate in the next few years. This explains therefore are strong suggestion for the creation of a special national structure with moral and financial autonomy to manage the sporting edifices.
