The just ended 48-hour official visit of the French President to Cameroon has rekindled hopes for a new impetus in the domains considered as growth-driven.
C ameroon and France are bound for a new mutually beneficial relation in various domains. The July 25-26 official visit of President Emmanuel Macron on invitation by his host President Paul Biya has paved the way for both countries to chart a new path as far as economic relations are concerned. President Macron acknowledged the huge financial support has doled out to Cameroon but added that the country is looking forward to deepening its ties with Cameroon in agricultural, digital economy, industry, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship and decentralization. As far as agriculture is concerned, France is concerned with the boosting of agricultural productivity in a bid to ensure food self-sufficiency and curb growing food insecurity. The current Russia-Ukraine war has exposed the vulnerabilities of most developing countries which depend solely on imported grains. Developing the agricultural sector towards resolving the over dependence on agricultural imported food stuff will go a long way to reducing imports. France got the technical expertise as well as the financing while Cameroon will put its abundant natural and human resources for the fruitful realization of such projects. The vision of both leaders is thus to increase agricultural production in order to feed the nation, export for foreign income earning as well as provide raw materials to feed the industry. Industrialization which has a huge propensity to create jobs for thousands of Cameroonians is also another domain the French President expressed desire to invest in during his stay in Yaounde. With the structural transformation of the economy contained in the National Development Strategy 2020-2030, the announcement of France’s intent to invest in the industrial sector is greeted with enthusiasm not only by the powers that be, but also by youth who are looking forward to clinch jobs. Another earmarked area France wants to strengthen ties with Cameroon is the digital economy sector. Considered as a power growth-lever across the world today, France and Cameroon will chart new path in developing the digital economy sector.
