Information and Communication Technologies: New Niches For Career Opportunities Abound

The ICTs which are today the driving force of the economy presents multiple job opportunities.

T he advent of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has drastically changed the way the society functions today. It is considered as the 4th industrial revolution as ICTs are at the heart of all socio-economic activities. It is an essential ingredient for competitiveness of enterprises and economic development of the country. Being an important factor of economic productivity in the 21st century, the government of Cameroon and partners are not relenting in putting in place the necessary infrastructure needed for the digital technology sector to blossom. The objective of the government in developing the ICTs is to make the digital sector a pillar in the attainment of Cameroon’s emergence through economic growth and job creation. Indeed, the National Strategy for the Development of ICTs had previewed the creation of some 10,000 jobs in the sector by 2020. These figure though not official confirmed whether it was attained, speaks volumes of the diverse new professions. With the dynamism in the digital sector in the country, the number of jobs created by the sector by now could even surpass the government target in 2020. Cameroon has an important source of digital start-ups with a significant transformation potential in very large companies. Some of these start-ups are genuine “gold nugget” for the economic development of our country. The data base of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications shows over 3,000 digital start-ups are recorded in the sector of application development, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, robotics and e-commerce. It should be recalled that the Head of State announced last February 10, while addressing youth on the occasion of the 56th edition of the National Youth Day that a National Employment Council will be created to enable enterprises leverage technology and boost productivity.
