Cameroon fondly referred to as “continent” by other nationals is indeed Africa in miniature. Cameroonian youth are now conscious of the fact that it is impossible for the government to employ every single Cameroonian. For this reason, they get the right orientation after their secondary education with many diving into business schools and other professional schools where upon graduation, they become job creators instead of job seekers. Ghislain Mfochigue Teukam, the founder of Sicotrat Group and promoter of Mataga, is one of the ambitious and daring youth who is an inspiration to many. Drifting from the traditional and normal plantains and Irish potato chips to sweet potato chips is telling of the level of research that has been carried out given that sweet potato chips needs a lot of techniques. With FCFA 32,000, he started producing few packets of sweet potato chips (Mataga) in 2020 and later suspended since the quality wasn’t convincing enough. Later in 2022, he got a team made up of committed youth, raised FCFA 150,000 and started production after spending two months to work only on the quality. With 15 workers, they started producing 300 packets of crispy and spicy sweet potato chip of 85g each. They later raised close to FCFA 6 million through crowd funding from some 63 investors and consumers. As the capital increased, more performant equipment were bought and production increased to 1,500 packets weekly.
