E lectricity is one of the very vital utilities the government should provide to its citizens not only for their wellbeing but also for the health of its economy. In Cameroon, the electricity sector is one of government’s priority inscribed in the National Development Strategy (NDS30) which aims at structurally transforming the economy. The powers that be are sensitive to the crucial role of electricity, the needs of the population, industries, the actual supply and are relentless in covering the deficit. Actual installed capacity if electricity is 1,720MW but the demand for industries and household uses is enormous. This is why the government through the Ministry of Energy and Water elaborated and adopted the Electricity Sector Recovery Plan in 2023. The plan is a set of reforms, actions and measures to pave the way for Cameroon’s energy and electricity emergence. This explains the concerted efforts government and partners like the World Bank, African Development Bank, amongst others, are putting to step up a conducive framework for improving the public electricity service and restoring the sector’s financial equilibrium. These efforts through huge investments have yielded fruits with electricity access rate in Cameroon attaining 65.4 per cent in 2021 according to the World Bank statistics. Conscious of the crucial role of electricity in economic and social development, the government is seeking to develop the sector as it is a catalyst to industrialization. Going by the National Development Strategy “the objective is to produce energy in abundant quantities to satisfy industrialization and to become an energy exporting country.” The development of industries, digital economy, SMEs all depend on a stable and reliable electricity supply to blossom. Attaining emergence by 2035, can therefore not be possible without adequate electricity supply.
