Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon has since February 17, 2024 turned into a global business hub as some 800 enterprises of all sizes and institutions have converged on the precincts of the Conference Centre for the 9th edition of the International Exhibition for Enterprises, SMEs and Partnerships of Yaounde dubbed PROMOTE. Participants have come from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa to showcase their savoir-fair in the production of goods and services. Holding on the theme “Private Sector, Evolution and Structural Transformation of African Economies,” the biggest trade fair in the central Africa sub-region presents a rare and brisk business opportunities to various exhibitors. Though the gate of the biannual event was flung open on Saturday February 17, the official kick-off was done on Monday February 19 by the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, who represented the Prime Minister, Head of Government. In the presence of a cream of other Cameroonian members of government, Central African Republic’s Minister of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and the Promotion of the Private Sector, Hyppolite Jean-Paul Ngate Robard, the European Union Head of Delegation to Cameroon, representative of the CEMAC Commission, amongst other dignitaries, the Minister of Trade on behalf of the Premier gave government’s blessings for the event which earlier received heavenly benedictions from the showers of rain. In his inaugural speech, the PM’s representative saluted the holding of the sub-regional exhibition fair for enterprises and SMEs which he said is timely and falls in line with government’s National Development Strategy (NDS30) and the African Continental Free Trade Area. The theme, he added, is also very relevant as it focuses on the structural transformation of the economy which is one of the core pillars of the National Development Strategy and the policy of import-substitution put in place by the government to promote the production and consumption of locally manufactured goods. PROMOTE is thus an opportunity for creators of wealth and made-in Cameroon label to showcase their products to the world. It is also an occasion which pinpoints the necessity for a change of paradigm which stresses on creativity and need to produce what we consume and consume what we produce especially within the context where Africa is called upon to promote the African Continental Free Trade Area.
