Production Of Cassava: An Opportunity To Reduce Importation

Cassava is one of the food items that is cultivated in huge quantities in all the regions of Cameroon. Though some six million tons are cultivated yearly, the sector is characterized by postharvest loss and minute processing ability. During the launch of the third edition of the international cassava festival dubbed “All Kassava” by the Association Femme, Action et Developpement (FADEC), the president of the Association, Yvette Ndome Banlog, disclosed that cassava is a product that permits more than 90 percent of women and youth to put food on their tables. She also said the association is fighting for women to get processing machines for to produce in quantity, and quality and count on it for livelihood. During the launch, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Gabriel Mbairobe expressed his gratitude to FADEC for organizing such an event where cassava producers and those who process products from cassava showcase their products, share experiences, and network for future collaboration. He disclosed that cassava is one of the most important food items that contributes to food security in Cameroon. He also said the production and processing of cassava will go a long way to bridge the balance of trade gap as some six million tons of cassava is produced yearly. If processed,the minister added some 1,500,000 tons of cassava flour will be gotten to substitute and reduce the importation of flour.
