In a concerted effort to address Cameroon’s ongoing food insecurity and stimulate rural economic activity, more than 500 smallholder farmers in the Fako Division received agricultural production kits on May 9, 2025. The support delivered across the Limbe III, Tiko, and Muyuka council areas is part of the Emergency Response Project to Combat the Food Crisis in Cameroon, known by its French acronym PULCA, co-financed by the Government of Cameroon and the World Bank and implemented through the South West Development Authority (SOWEDA). Presiding over the distribution ceremony at the Tiko Council esplanade, Woulsou Jacques, Inspector General at the Governor’s Office, emphasized that the intervention forms part of a broader economic stabilization strategy focused on food production. The agricultural sector remains a key pillar of Cameroon’s economy, contributing an estimated 30 per cent to GDP and employing a significant portion of the rural population. “This support is part of a strategic effort to stabilize food production in the region,” the Inspector General noted, highlighting the government’s commitment to cushioning the effects of inflation, supply disruptions, and rural poverty. The PULCA initiative has injected significant production capital into local farming systems since its inception in 2024. The project has recorded significant milestone with the following support to farmers; 3 million cassava cuttings distributed to boost staple crop production, 48 maize scratchers and 510 plantain cutters to facilitate small-scale agri-processing, Comprehensive livestock kits, including broiler chicks at multiple growth stages and vaccination campaigns to mitigate poultry mortality. Aquaculture inputs—notably catfish fingerlings and production kits have also been distributed to diversify protein sources and support fish farmers, equipment for pond and tank fish production and fish processing, aiding post-harvest value addition as well as tools and materials to support honey production as an alternative income source.
