Buea Drainage Challenge: Detention Ponds Will Curb Floods

A University of Buea engineering student proposed that in his Bsc in Engineering thesis.

A student of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) of the University of Buea (UB), Mpih Polycarp Zekwa, has proposed solution to curb floods in Buea. He wants to avoid the ugly scenario of March 18, 2023, whereby floods caused devastating destruction in Buea. In that unfortunate incident, lives were lost, properties destroyed and many rendered homeless. The tempest floods destroyed part of the fence of the Synod Office of the Presbyterian Church In Cameroon. Many taxis too got damaged and the floods overwhelmed the road in front of the Cameroon GCE Board. This rendered movement along the Buea main boulevard impossible for hours. Mpih Polycarp in his final year thesis defended on July 5, 2025, proposed a system that collect the runoff and channel them at a slow velocity without causing any harm. The runoff is stored in detention ponds to reduce the downstream drainage capacity.
