Buea: Mobile Banking Rises Amid Connectivity Concerns

Digital banking is changing how Cameroonians access, manage and move their money.

Banking in Cameroon is undergoing a quiet revolution. With the rise of mobile banking applications and the integration of mobile wallets, financial operations such as deposits, withdrawals, and money transfers have become easier, faster, and more accessible than ever before. Several commercial banks now offer dedicated mobile apps and USSD platforms that link user accounts directly to mobile money services. Through these digital channels, customers can conveniently move money from their bank accounts to mobile wallets like MTN Mobile Money or Orange Money, and vice versa, without stepping into a branch. This growing digitization is aimed at enhancing financial inclusion and easing everyday transactions. Richard Buma, Branch Manager at Afriland First Bank Buea, said their digital platform SARA has served individual customers for over five years, while E-First caters to corporate clients. “These platforms are built to make financial transactions simpler— whether it’s transferring funds, paying suppliers, or sending money to family,” Mr Buma explained. He stressed that security, speed, and simplicity remain central to these services. “We want our clients to feel that their bank is with them wherever they go,” he said, pointing to the convenience of easy transactions or initiating payments from any location. An official at another major bank, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the trend, noting that digital platforms are helping reduce congestion at banking halls and offering customers more control over their finances. However, despite these advances, not all customers have fully embraced the digital shift. Many still prefer to walk into banking halls to carry out deposits and withdrawals.
