West Africa Energy: Nigeria Navigates its Oil Gas Future

As the 49th Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition concludes this July 5th in Lagos, industry leaders are weighing how Africa’s top energy producer can leverage its massive reserves to drive long-term economic growth.

N igeria’s hydrocarbon sector holds Africa’s largest proven natural gas reserves estimated at 211.1 trillion cubic feet and over 37 billion barrels of crude oil. Figures which proof, the nation retains an enviable resource base. Recent data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regula­ tory Commission confirms that crude and condensate output climbed to 1.73 million barrels per day, meeting over 100% of the benchmark put in place by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Despite these figures which signal a strong operational re­ covery, discussions at the 2026 Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE) highlight that the volume energy resources produced is no longer sufficient. Under the conference banner of collabo­ rative growth and resilience, stakeholders at Lagos’s Eko Convention Centre focused their exchange on structural challenges including onshore asset security, deep-water in­ vestment incentives, and do­ mestic gas commercialization.
