Cameroon’s Luxury Hotel Boom: A New Battle for the Five-Star Market

More five-star capacity can make the country more competitive for international conferences, diplomatic meetings, corporate events and major sporting competitions.

F or years, Cameroon’s luxury hotel landscape was almost synonymous with the Hilton Hotel Yaounde. The five-star landmark in the capital stood largely alone at the top of the hospitality ladder, serving diplomats, bu­ siness travellers, international organisations and major confe­ rences. Today, the picture is changing rapidly. The arrival of the locally owned Krystal Palace in Douala, followed by the five-star Concord Interna­ tional Hotel in Yaoundé and the Tagidor Garden Resort and Spa in Bangou, signals a new era of competition. Krystal Palace, promoted by business­ man Samuel Foyou, brought 237 rooms, suites, restaurants, bars, a business centre, tennis court and conference facilities, in an investment estimated at FCFA16 billion. Concord International, built by the Association of Treasury Staff, represents about FCFA19 billion and has 116 rooms and suites, including presidential suites. Tagidor, located in Bangou in the West Region, has added another dimension to luxury properties. The resort com­ bines accommodation with restaurants, spa, swimming pool, sports and landscaped leisure facilities. Its develop­ ment was also boosted by preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations, demonstra­ ting how major international events can accelerate hotel investment. The next wave of luxury hotels could be even more spectacular. In Douala, the FCFA 220-billion Kempinski Shekinah Palace, promoted by Cameroonian entrepre­ neur Rodolphe Simo Kam’s All Luxury Suites Group, is set to combine a five-star hotel with 214 rooms and suites, 35 serviced apartments, 17,000 square metres of Grade-A offices, restaurants, shops and a conference facility of about 2,000 seats.
