Cocoa Production: FCFA 800 Million Paid To 7995 Farmers As Premiums

They plan to buy farm inputs with the money while others will use theirs in sponsoring their children in school.

C ocoa farmers in Fako, Meme, Ngila, Nkondjock, Bokito, Obala, Akonolinga, Teate are among 300 localities in Cameroon where premium have been paid to them starting June 8, 2022 that lasted for one week. In all, there were 7995 farmers who benefitted the sum of FCFA 800 million for supplying about 16 000 tons of certified cocoa beans during the 2021/2022 cocoa session. The bonuses have been paid by Agroproduce Management Services (AMS) Mutengene and has done so for the tenth time. The premium is an additional amount that cocoa farmers receive over the normal market price after a successful certification year. AMS officials said it is a token from consumers through chocolate companies to appreciate the farmers for following norms and producing good quality cocoa. The beneficiaries had taken part in a Rainforest Alliance certification training, implemented the required norms which were inspected together with AMS and an independent third party organisation.

Muma Daniel, cocoa farmer from Ediki, has insufficient farm inputs. His bonuses will be used in buying chemicals and farm tools for his farm. He has been into cocoa farming for 20 years but his fifth year in benefitting from the premiums through AMS. Enow Ebai Celestine, another cocoa farmer, signed FCFA 75 000. He sees the premium as a call to work harder. That he was producing two tons yearly and will now work harder to step up production in order to receive more premium next time.
