North West: UNVDA Equipped to Boost Rice Productivity

Henceforth, about 100,000 tons of Ndop Rice are expected to be produced annually.

T he situation of rice pro­ duction in the Ndop Basin is expected to improve drastically following the installation of newly acquired modern machines with funds from the Presidential Plan for Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions. Also there are plans to increase the irrigated land to about 17,000 hectares. The Minister of Agri­ culture and Rural Development Gabriel Mbairobe, disclosed in Ndop on July 2, 2026 that the objective of the State is to increase rice production in the Ndop Basin to about 100,000 tons annually. This move by the State through the Upper Noun Valley Development Au­ thority (UNVDA) is aimed at encouraging the production and consumption of locally produced rice. In the Ndop Basin, rice production is not solely in the hands of private individuals and cooperatives. The government plays a vital role in the process through UNVDA. Statistics from UNVDA reveal that the estimated cost of production ranges as follows. 1 room (200m square cost FCFA 17,000. While the estimated cost of production in a hectare is FCFA 85,000 with an estimated average yield 5 tons which can yield an estimated income of FCFA 900,000. The prices of the Paddy Rice is different. There is Tox2 which cost FCFA180 / kg while the prices of Tainan5 also differ depending on the grade. For instance, Grade 1 cost FCFA 315/kg, and grade 4 cost FCFA 190/ kg. Same with the white rice produce in the Ndop area. The prices range as follows. 5kg of the long grain cost FCFA 2,500frs while 10kg cost FCFA 5,000, 25kg cost FCFA 12,500 and you will have 50kg for FCFA 25,000. The quantities produced too vary from year to year. In 2016, the quantity produced was 17,823 tons while the latest figures indicate that UNVDA’s 21,000 tons produces annually on area of 37,000 hectares. It...
