I t is the festive period and businesses are booming in all sectors in Fako Division of the South West Region. In Buea on Friday, November 29, 2024, a walk from Clerks’ Quarter through the Molyko student residential area to Mutengene in Tiko Subdivision, one could observe fashion shops competing to outshine one another as they display the latest dresses. Customers too are seen in the shops doing shopping. The dealers sell dresses from two principal countries: China and Turkey. They sell dresses for both infants and adults. Supermarkets too are also bringing in new goods and taking off the old ones from their shelves. Nyoh Mistry is a fashion dealer in Mutengene at Buea Road. She specializes in female wears. She sells handbags, jewelries, perfume and slippers. Her Turkey gowns range from FCFA 30 000 to 150 000. The female dresses imported from China sell between FCFA 6000 and 15 000. She employs discount depending on the items bought and the quantity. She has also stepped up her customer service. Enongone Gladys who sells in Clerks’ Quarter Buea has a variety male and female dresses including Africa wears. Her dresses range from CFA 20 000 to 80 000. “We have new stocks and it is difficult to give a discount because prices are really high in the market. But we are ready to give discounts in old stock. The old prices for our dresses is FCFA 25 000 and the new price is FCFA 15 000,” she said. Another male vendor in Molyko said there are many shops selling dresses. And to be able to attract or keep customers, he gives discounts which depends on the quantity of dresses bought.
