Combat Unnecessary Customers’ Exploitation

It is no longer news that prices of commodities are witnessing hikes in local markets across the country. This is however not peculiar to Cameroon as the price surge is motivated by external factors caused mainly by the Russia-Ukraine war and the protracted Covid-19 pandemic. The generalized inflation has rendered the purchasing power of families very fragile and the back-to-school expenses are adding more pressure on parents and sponsors. Without a corresponding increment in family incomes, parents are certainly finding it very difficult to prepare their children for back-to-school. During the recent first semester conference of Regional Governors, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, while urging the civil administrators to keep watching over the market trends, said unscrupulous business operators are taking advantage of the situation to increase prices of just everything. With the 2022/2023 school year around the corner, this is the peak season for businesses on school materials. Markets and shops are being filled by parents and school kids seeking to buy one or two items ahead of September 5 opening date. Even along the streets of major cities and towns, hawkers have inundated every strategic corner to make brisk business with school materials. In the course of this rush and given the context of generalized hikes in prices of commodities, there is a tendency for business operators scheming to double their profits to unduly exploit customers with exorbitant prices.
