Protection of Biodiversity: Cameroon Launches 2nd Phase of Biosecurity Project

Cameroon in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has kick-started the second phase of the Biosecurity Project. Minister Hele Pierre of the Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) chaired the inception meeting of the second phase of the project in Yaounde on September 12. The project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the government of Cameroon is executed under the supervisory authority of the UNEP and MINEPDED. The objective is to strengthen institutional biosecurity frameworks with the management of invasive alien species and living modified organisms through coordinated risks analysis measures. Speaking during the launching of the second phase of the biosecurity project, the Minister Hele Pierre underscored the importance of the project which he said will help in the protection of the biodiversity (human and animal lives as well as plants). “Invasive alien species as well as living modified organisms are a threat to biodiversity reason why there is the need for the putting in place of a structure to guarantee the safety of not only human and animal lives but also plants,” he said. To the UNEP representative, Alex Owusu-Biney, the project is basically to ensure the risk of any product that comes into the environment and see how it can be managed in case of any emergency. The idea, Mr Owusu-Biney said, is to ensure the safety of the environment, the biodiversity of Cameroon and the people.
