Rural Electrification: The Example From Widikum Council

The council has embarked on two mini hydro electricity projects one to supply power to the oil mill

T he Mayor of Widikum Council in Momo Division of the North West Region, Andoh Stanislaus Tambu is setting the pace in rural electrification intended to stimulate the local industry, create jobs and electrify houses in the council area. The Development Economist, Mayor Andoh started off with the construction of a min- hydro electricity dam that will provide some 100 KBA energy to make the Giant Oil Mill in Widikum town operational. The project is estimated to cost FCFA 250 million. The Mayor said that the oil mill was donated by Grassfield Participatory and Decentralized Rural Development Project (GP- DERUDEP) but it cannot function because of lack of electricity. The ENEO power grid passes through Widikum but the area has no electricity for over three years. Mayor Andoh Stanislaus disclosed that the electrification project is 80 per cent executed and what is remaining is the installation of transformers and the transportation of power to the Giant Oil Mill in Widikum town. He further acknowledged that the Electricity Sector Regulatory Agency (ARSEL) does allow another source of electricity where there is already a grid but while waiting their Council electricity source will be used to enable the Giant Oil Mill go operational. When completed, the project will meet the council’s ambition to make the machines of the oil mill functional, stimulate agricultural production in the palms sector and generate employment at the local level.
